The Little Gambler Who Could

You’ve read every piece of strategy; listened to every word of advice; and played the tables several times over.

Think you’re ready to bust the bank?

Unless you have an attitude to match your know-how, your casino skills are worthless.

The single-most important part of a player’s game plan, is understanding that unless you can keep your emotions in check, all of the knowledge in the world won’t keep you in the black. There is nothing that a player can’t learn about the strategy of gambling that isn’t available in a book. Understanding the emotional roller-coaster you go through isn’t as simple as making a trip to the local library.

For example, when playing blackjack, developing your sense of timing and understanding when it is time to hit and when it is time to quit, is far more valuable than memorizing flash cards. The greatest myth in the gambling world is that the dealer and the casino are your enemies. In fact, you are your greatest adversary.

When you play at a casino, it’s a well-known fact that the odds are not in your favor. But don’t even bother placing a bet if you believe you are going to lose. Envision yourself as the Little Gambler Who Could.

It goes without saying that every player will run into a bad stretch, so prepare yourself for them when they arise. That’s when your sense of timing must be put to the test. Will you cut your losses and wait for your luck to improve, or, will you be like most players, and dig further into your bankroll, hoping the odds will turn in your favor? Keep in mind that a small profit is better than no profit, or worse, a big hit.

Above all else, gambling and alcohol — of any amount — don’t mix. There’s a reason why booze is called chip remover and why the land-based casinos like to ply their patrons with drinks. Even while playing from home, resist the temptation to have a pint of beer or cooler while you are playing. It’s your money that you’re playing with, so it’s best to have all of your faculties when you’re playing for cash.

Developing a proper attitude takes as much work, perhaps more, to develop than your game skills. But considering how big a factor our emotions play in the decisions we make on a daily basis, it’s easy to understand why we must harness them if we are going to be successful at the tables.
